An Italy honeymoon itinerary is idyllic. There are the sun-drenched beaches of the Mediterranean, the eternal city of Rome, and the romantic, canal-lined Venice. Italy honeymoon ideas are truly endless!

This also makes planning a 7-day, 10-day, or even a 2-week honeymoon in Italy quite the challenge. Italy is a country full of exciting cities and villages, great wine regions, incredible beaches (it is a peninsula, after all), and so much more.

Thankfully, we’re here to help you figure out how to plan the best Italy honeymoon itinerary whether you’ve got 7 or 10 days. Plus, as a bonus, we’ve got some ideas for a 2 week Italy honeymoon too!

Without further ado, let’s dive into the best way to spend your honeymoon in Italy!

Italy Honeymoon Itinerary

Ultimate 7-Day Italy Honeymoon Itinerary

So perhaps you’re short on time and are still dreaming of an Italian honeymoon. We get it. In fact, we also recently only had 7 days in Italy where we explored some off-the-beaten-path spots with our limited time.

While I could give you a standard 7-day Italy honeymoon itinerary, there are so many options that you may want to enjoy based on your preferences. So here are some great ideas for your 7-day honeymoon in Italy.

Duomo di Milano

Option 1 First Timer Italy Honeymoon Guide: Milan, Florence, & Rome

  • Day 1: Milan
  • Days 2-3: Florence
  • Day 4: Tuscany Wineries Day Trip
  • Day 5-7: Rome

This is definitely a great Italian honeymoon itinerary where you could fly into Milan and spend a full day exploring the Duomo, admire the Last Supper painting at Santa Maria Delle Grazie, and enjoy this exciting northern Italian city.

I actually recommend checking out this Walks of Italy Milan tour that includes a guided tour of the Duomo, Last Supper Museum, and the city. This is a great option if you fly in the evening before.

Then, you’re off to explore the Renaissance city of Florence. Walk along the Ponte Vecchio, admire works of art at the Uffizi Gallery, see the statue of David, and wander this endlessly charming city.

Tuscany in Italy

Spend day 4 on a day trip exploring the wineries of Tuscany before spending your last few days in Rome.

Go on a tour of the Colosseum and Roman Forum, see the Vatican as it opens for the day, toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain together, eat all the delicious Roman delights like Carbonara and Roman pizza, and spot ancient ruins throughout the city.

This is a great way to spend your time in Italy for your 1 week Italy honeymoon.

Then, wrap up your last few days in Rome including a visit to the Vatican and Colosseum, and perhaps partake in a food tour of Rome

After a couple of days of exploring the charms of Venice, take a day trip to Murano, Burano, and Torcello to experience its glass, colorful buildings, and more.

Then head to Lake Como for a beautiful few days along one of Italy’s most beautiful lakes. Rent a car to explore the towns along the lake, and be sure to get out on the lake for a fun and romantic getaway with your love!

Option 5: Off-the-Beaten Path Food & Wine Italy Honeymoon Itinerary

  • Day 1: Milan
  • Days 2-3: Piedmont
  • Day 4: Bologna
  • Day 5: Day Trip to Modena
  • Days 6-7: Rome

For a quick week-long honeymoon in Italy for those who want to try something a little different, or perhaps just want to really partake in Italy’s food and wine, this is the ideal itinerary for you.

This is actually the itinerary we just did while we were in Italy in May of 2022. It was such a fun trip where we began with a day of exploring Milan before spending 2 days in Piedmont, sipping wine in many vineyards and exploring hilltop towns with Alba Wine Tours

Then, we took the train to Bologna to visit and eat all the tasty food from the Emilia-Romagna region. We also did a day trip to Modena while there to take a food tour and try balsamic vinegar. This region is also known for its Mortadella, Parmesano Reggiano, Bolognese, tortellini, and more!

And lastly, we spent a couple of days in Rome where we saw the Colosseum and Vatican! I highly recommend this Italy honeymoon trip in 7 days if you are short on time and want to do something less crowded and more food and wine-focused.

10-Day Italy Honeymoon Itinerary Ideas

While there are several options for a 7-day Italy honeymoon itinerary, they make a great base for planning your 10-day honeymoon in Italy!

Here are some great 10-day Italy honeymoon itineraries!

Venice Canals in Italy

Option 1: Typical Italy 10-Day Itinerary

  • Days 1-2: Venice
  • Day 3: Day Trip to Murano/Burano
  • Days 4-5: Florence
  • Day 6: Tuscany Day Trip
  • Days 7-10: Rome

If you’ve never been to Italy before, this is the itinerary that is most popular to take. And it makes sense! You’ve got the romantic honeymoon-esque bridges and canals of Venice, the dreamy city of Florence and the Tuscan countryside, and the romantic and bustling city of Rome.

What’s not to love? And with 10 days in Italy, you can actually take your time a bit. You’ll have more time to really take in Rome together. You’ve got some time to enjoy Florence and Venice too.

So while you’re here for 10 days, be sure to check out that day trip from Venice to the islands of Murano, Burano, and Torcello as well as a winery trip for Chianti in Tuscany

And with some extra time in Rome, you can perhaps enjoy a twilight tour of the city with a gelato tasting at the end.

Option 3: Northern Italy 10-Day Honeymoon Itinerary

  • Days 4: Verona
  • Days 5-6: Val Gardena in the Dolomites
  • Days 7-8: Lake Como
  • Days 9-10: Milan

If you’ve been to Italy before and don’t necessarily need to see the beaches, then why not spend time up north for your honeymoon?

Enjoy the charms of Venice and the islands before venturing to the town of Verona, made famous by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliette. Visit Juilette’s House, see the Verona Arena, and just wander the idyllic streets of this place.

Then, explore the mountains in the Dolomites in Val Gardena. This area is great if you don’t have a car, and is perfect for hiking and skiing!

Then, head to Lake Como to admire this popular Italian lake before spending a couple of days in Milan and flying home.

As much as we loved the quick week-long trip we took earlier this year, if you have 10 days for an Italian honeymoon and love the beach, add on some beach time!

Start in Milan before sipping wine and perhaps truffle hunting in Piedmont. Then, head to the Cinque Terre for a couple of days of sun-drenched beach time before enjoying all the food that Bologna and Modena have to offer.

Then, wrap up your time in Italy in Rome with visits to the Vatican and Colosseum. This is a great way to get a great combination of popular Italy honeymoon destinations as well as some lesser visited spots.

Option 5: Southern Italy Honeymoon Itinerary in 10 Days

  • Day 1: Naples
  • Day 2: Day Trip to Capri or Amalfi Coast
  • Days 3-8: Puglia Road Trip
  • Days 9-10: Rome

For a more Southern Italy honeymoon itinerary, definitely opt to explore the lesser known but becoming more well-known Puglia.

Start your honeymoon in Naples for a day and take a day trip to Capri, the Amalfi Coast, or perhaps Pompeii.

Then, take the train to Puglia and rent a car for the ultimate road trip around Italy’s heel. Explore the exciting city of Bari before wandering to the charming beehive-shaped Trulli houses in Alberobello.

Then, enjoy the Baroque architecture and Roman ruins of Lecce. Of course, being the heel of Italy’s boot, there are ample beaches to enjoy during your time there!

After that road trip, head back to the train station in Bari and head to Rome for your last couple of days in Italy.

What to Do For a 2-Week Italy Honeymoon Itinerary

I know that I’ve given you a ton of options when it comes to both 7 and 10-day Italy honeymoon itineraries. But what if you are planning a honeymoon to Italy and have 2 weeks?

First of all, that’s amazing! Spending a full 2 weeks in Italy sounds absolutely incredible, and something many Americans don’t get to do (thanks no federally mandated time off).

But, I’ll keep it simple here as there are endless options if you have a two-week honeymoon in Italy itinerary!

First of all, you could spend an entire 2 weeks just exploring Italy’s vast and incredible islands. That’s right. Rent a car in both Sicily AND Sardinia and explore these beautiful islands including their cities, beaches, vineyards, and more.

Spend a week on each of these islands and you’ll leave understanding so much more about these relaxing and enticing destinations.

OR

Val Gardena in Italy

You could pick one of the 10-day itineraries listed above and add on another city or destination for 4 days!

Planning a northern Italy 14-day honeymoon? Then take the 10-day itinerary and add on a few days in the Cinque Terre before flying out of Milan.

Or you could take the typical 10-day itinerary of Venice, Florence, and Rome and add on the Amalfi Coast.

Want to explore Milan, Piedmont, Cinque Terre, Bologna, and Rome? Then take that 10-day itinerary and either add an extra day in Milan, Piedmont and Rome OR add in some time on the Amalfi Coast or even check out Ravenna while in Emilia-Romagna.

And if you want to explore southern Italy with Puglia, swap out Naples for some time on the Amalfi Coast before exploring Puglia and Rome. Also, you could add in an extra day in Rome here because it’s a big city with much to explore.

Essentially, the options are kind of endless, especially if you have more time. While 2 weeks won’t cover the whole country, it is a ton of time to see a big chunk of Italy on your honeymoon.

You can also use this time to really slow down and enjoy places very slowly. Truly it’s up to you.

Tips For Your Italy Honeymoon Guide

When it comes to planning your Italy honeymoon, here are some things to keep in mind.

How to Get Around Italy: While the train system is a great way to get around Italy, some more remote destinations and less touristy places may require a car. Check Rentalcars.com for great deals! Renting a car can be a great idea for places like Lake Como, the Dolomites, Puglia, and the islands.

For Train Travel: We checked Trenitalia and booked tickets there!

When to Visit Italy: It all depends on what you want to do! If you want to ski in the mountains, then winter is obviously the time to go! Want to enjoy beaches? Summer through early fall is best. Want to avoid crowds and have decent weather (AKA not too hot or cold)? Opt for April and October.

Trevi Fountain

Forget Your Diet: Seriously. Italy is full of amazing food from its pasta to its pastries and apertivos to its wine and you don’t want to miss a thing. Enjoy every sip and morsel.

How Much To Budget: Trying to figure out how much an Italy honeymoon costs? We have a whole post!

Have Fun: Have an incredible Italy honeymoon itinerary! You’re going to fall in love with this country and plan your return as soon as you leave!

Italy is truly an incredible country to visit. It is filled to the brim with romance from its enchanting hilltop villages, its wildly romantic cities, and its delectable cuisine. A honeymoon here is a dreamy start to married life and I cannot recommend it enough.
