15 Best South American Honeymoon Destinations
Let’s dive into the best honeymoons in South America that are worthy of your bucket list!
1. Sacred Valley, Peru
While Machu Picchu is a spectacular destination to see, the whole Sacred Valley is well worth a visit!
For starters, there are tons of amazing Incan ruins to spot around the Sacred Valley, including the Moray Agricultural Terraces, the Maras Salt Mines, and the epic Ollantaytambo ruins.
Plus, there are incredible markets like the Pisac Market and Chinchero’s Market, stunning mountain views, and more!
And for the truly adventurous, you can even trek to Machu Picchu together!
While, of course, there is no shortage of luxurious hotels to pamper yourself at during your exploration of the Sacred Valley, there is the chance to stay at the exciting SkyLodge Adventure Suites perched high on a cliffside overlooking the Urubamba River.
Spend a night here where you’ll have to Via Ferrata or zipline hike to the lodge, and then you’ll end your stay by ziplining or rappelling down.
Then, it is a good idea to pamper yourself with a stay at the Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel located right next to the entrance to Machu Picchu.
And for another lovely hotel stay in the Sacred Valley, opt for the Sol Y Luna for their lovely casitas with amazing views.

2. Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
The Galapagos Islands are a bucket list item for many, especially for its diverse wildlife, endemic species, and incredible landscapes on each island.
The best way to see the Galapagos Islands has to be via a smaller cruise. The Reine Silvia Voyager only accommodates up to 16 guests, meaning you’ll get a more tailored experience.
Swim with friendly seals, snorkel to find sea turtles, relax on beautiful beaches, and spot all the amazing wildlife on land including the famed Galapagos tortoises and the many bird species.
The Galapagos Islands are truly a place like no other, making it easily one of the best honeymoon destinations in South America!
3. Cartagena, Colombia is Perfect For Your Honeymoon in South America
This colorful and vibrant Caribbean city is a fabulous place to honeymoon! You can wander through the Old Town, take a cooking class, catch a sunset from the sea, and perhaps even explore the nearby Rosario Islands.
Take in sights like the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas during the day, and salsa dance the night away together!
This iconic city is full of great culture, tons of history, and amazing cuisine to enjoy during your South America honeymoon.
And if you want to relax, you can do that too on the beaches of nearby Isla Baru or even in Bocagrande. Want to relax by a pool that overlooks the sea? Opt for the Hyatt Regency Cartagena in the Bocagrande neighborhood.
For a lovely place to stay in the old city, check out the Hotel Boutique las Carretas.
4. Mendoza Province, Argentina
For those who love epic mountain scenery and a delightful glass of red wine, Mendoza may be the place for you when it comes to South American honeymoon ideas!
Most people tend to think of Malbec when they think of the Mendoza wine region, but this area is also known for grapes like Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Bonarda.
The Mendoza wine region includes many subregions including Maipu, Lujan de Cuyo, and the Uco Valley, meaning you’re certainly in no shortage of vineyards to explore and delicious wines to taste.
Also, being so close to the Andes, the city of Mendoza is a great place to base yourself for day trips including a High Andes Aconcagua Mountain tour, horseback riding, white water rafting, and more!
A great place to stay in the city of Mendoza is the Park Hyatt Mendoza. This lovely hotel is close to the main attractions and is a great place to base yourself for exploring.
From here you can take many wine tours around the wine region.
Or, you can also choose to stay near a vineyard to really experience the vineyard life. Canvas Wine Lodge is located in the Lujan de Cuyo and is quite a luxurious place to stay right among the vines.
5. Punta del Este, Uruguay is Perfect For a South America Beach Honeymoon
While many may not picture Uruguay on a list of South America honeymoon spots, this is a great place to enjoy the sea together.
Punta del Este is a delightful seaside city about 2 hours from the capital city of Montevideo.
Here you can do things like check out La Mano, which is a sculpture of a hand emerging from the sand located on Playa Brava to warn swimmers of its rough and dangerous waves.
For swimming, check out the calmer Playa Mansa. Either way, there are plenty of places to enjoy the nightlife of this resort town as well as partake in things like sunbathing, surfing, snorkeling, and more!
For a lovely place to stay, check out The Grand Hotel with its huge spa, beautiful rooms, many with ocean views, and a rooftop bar and lounge. Plus, this hotel is right across from the famous Playa Brava and has a beachside lounge.
6. Honeymoon in South America Ideas: Buenos Aires, Argentina
This city is full of amazing architecture, incredible nightlife, and stunning parks, and is just a fantastic city in which to enjoy your South American honeymoon!
Check out the main attractions like the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires Malba, the Plaza de Mayo, Teatro Colon, Tres de Febrero Park, the Palacio Barolo, the Recoleta Cemetery, the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral, and more!
In between taking in the cultural sights, you’ll also want to enjoy the excellent food scene here on a food tour as well as learn to tango!
You’ll quickly become entranced by the sights, sounds, tastes, and more of this charming South American city.
For a delightful stay, check out the Jardin Escondido, a plant-filled oasis hotel located in the Palermo Soho neighborhood.
7. Patagonia, Argentina and Chile
For an adventure honeymoon in South America, Patagonia may just be the place! Between the vibrant lakes, jaw-dropping mountains, and pristine glaciers, you’ll love the chance to venture around Patagonia in Argentina and Chile.
Visit places like the Torres del Paine National Park, Perito Moreno Glacier, and more!
I recommend going with a tour to really get the most out of it, and they’ll handle logistics and where you’ll stay during your trip.
This Intrepid Tour includes stops at the Laguna de Los Tres at the foot of Mount Fitz Roy, Perito Moreno Glacier, Torres del Paine National Park, and even Tierra del Fuego National Park as it ends in Ushuaia.
8. The Amazon Rainforest in Peru is One of the Top Honeymoon Destinations in South America
The world’s largest rainforest isn’t only in Brazil, in fact, it spreads to Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Suriname, Venezuela, and French Guiana.
And the Amazon Rainforest actually takes up about half of the land in Peru! Peru is also a really great place to check out the Amazon and include it as a stop in a longer Peru itinerary.
There are also several places to explore the Amazon Rainforest in Peru including Manu, Tambopata, and Iquitos. We have a whole guide to help you choose where to go.
We absolutely loved the Tambopata, especially staying at the Tambopata Research Center. This getaway has 3-walled rooms, meaning you have a whole open wall to the jungle!
While that sounds scary at night, don’t worry! The rooms are high above the ground so big critters can’t just come in the room, and you do have a canopy bed with a bug net.
In fact, it is actually quite soothing at night to hear the sounds of the jungle. And being this far remote in the rainforest means you see a ton of great wildlife including capybara, agouti, macaws, and even jaguars!
While here, we saw 2 jaguars and had the chance to see several parrots and macaws at the Colorado Clay Lick. This place also does guided hikes, night hikes, and sunset cruises.
It was such an unforgettable experience that is perfect for honeymooners who would like to get in touch with nature.
But if you prefer to stay somewhere along the Amazon River itself, you can opt for the Delfin Amazon Cruise where you’ll cruise on the Amazon River and potentially even spot the famous pink dolphins!
9. The Amazon Rainforest, Brazil is One of the Best South American Honeymoon Destinations
Of course, when most people think of the Amazon Rainforest, they think of Brazil. So if you want to enjoy time spent in the Brazil Amazon, you can do that at a place like the stunning Juma Amazon Lodge.
This place is located in the middle of the forest southeast of Manaus. It is in a remote location, perfect for wildlife spotting! This place offers both jungle and river bungalows with amazing views.
There is also the opportunity to do things like canoeing, night walks, jungle hikes, fishing, and visiting the observation tower.
Again, if you prefer to sail along the Amazon River itself, check out the Grand Amazon Expedition for a 5-star cruise on the river.
10. Coffee Triangle, Colombia
For a tranquil South American honeymoon getaway, you’ll love the hilly and vibrant Coffee Triangle of Colombia.
The three departments of Caldas, Risaralda, and Quindio, and their capital cities of Manizales, Pereira, and Armenia make up the Coffee Triangle of Colombia.
This place is for coffee lovers, as you’ll find many coffee plantations, stunning wooden houses, and gorgeous valleys.
Plus, while here you can enjoy the Valle del Cocora, an area known for its wax palm trees that tower overhead. There are also relaxing hot springs at Santa Rosa de Cabal Hot Springs.
So be sure to take some time to hike, relax, sip coffee, and enjoy the scenery in this delightful part of Colombia.
For a lovely place to stay, opt for Hacienda Combia, a charming hacienda that even has its own coffee experiences for you to enjoy!
11. Cusco, Peru
Cusco is such a cool city. This city has a mix of Incan and Spanish architecture from its plazas to its churches.
So you can spend quite a bit of time exploring the city, visiting places like San Pedro Market, Plaza de Armas, San Blas, ChocoMuseo, Museo y Catacumbas del Convento San Francisco de Asís del Cusco, Church of the Society of Jesus, and even taking day trips to places like Rainbow Mountain!
This is also the place to try some fantastic Peruvian food including at places like Yaku Cocina de Altura, Chicha, and Kusikuy Restaurante.
For a dreamy place to stay, check out Rumi Wasi. This place is built into the hill over Incan ruins, and there is a fantastic balcony overlooking the city.
Another great place is the luxurious Belmond Palacio Nazarenas. This place has stellar mountain views, a spa, a pool with a bar, and lovely rooms!
12. Iguazu Falls, Brazil and Argentina
One of the most famous waterfalls in South America, Iguazu Falls straddles the border between Brazil and Argentina.
Enjoy these towering falls as you explore both sides, take a boat ride around the falls, and perhaps even take a helicopter ride over the falls.
You’ll definitely want to hike the Devil’s Throat Trail to see the most impressive view! Outside of the falls, check out the Itaipu Dam in Brazil, go birdwatching in the area, and perhaps go kayaking on the Parana River.
For a romantic stay, check out the Gran Melia Iguazu hotel. This 5-star hotel located on the Argentinian side of the falls, is the only hotel inside the Iguazu National Park. Some of the rooms even have views of the falls!
13. Central Valley Wine Region, Chile
While the Central Valley Wine region of Chile isn’t too far from Mendoza, this landscape is well known for its Carmenere. Formerly from Bordeaux, Carmenere grows really well in this part of the world, making it a fantastic place to visit for this varietal.
Syrah is also another grape grown in the region, so red wine lovers will also love this luxury South American honeymoon destination.
The Central Valley wine country is actually composed of the Maipo Valley, Cachapoal Valley, Colchagua Valley, Curico Valley, and Maule Valley. And it is in these regions you can also find Cabernet Sauvignon.
Also, Santiago is close to many wineries in the Central Valley, making it easy to fly into the capital and start exploring the decadent wine this country has to offer.
For a romantic getaway, a stay at the Matetic Vineyards at their Hotel Boutique La Casona is in order. You can also go on a tour of the vineyard and/or tastings with them during your stay.
14. Uyuni, Bolivia
While it takes quite a while to get here, it is well worth it to see the iconic salt flats called Salar de Uyuni.
Aside from exploring the salt flats themselves, there are a lot of other things to do in the area including hiking up Incahuasi Island, witnessing the beautiful Ollague Volcano from afar, admiring flamingos at the Laguna Cañapa and Laguna Hedionda, visiting the red Laguna Colorada, or even exploring the Sol de Manana geothermal area.
Of course, you’ll also want to take fun photos together on the salt flats themselves. The optical illusions are endless here!
For a gorgeous place to stay near Salar de Uyuni, you’ll love the Hotel Palacio de Sal. This hotel has views of the salt flats in addition to a fantastic spa and a gourmet restaurant.
15. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Rio is a fantastic destination where you can enjoy things like Tijuca National Park (a manmade tropical park in the city), learn Samba, hike around the city, visit the Christ the Redeemer Statue, and enjoy the sun and sand at Copacabana Beach.
Rio is also a fantastic place to visit for celebrations like Carnival or their famous New Year’s Eve parties!
If you’re planning a January honeymoon and want to come here for New Year’s Eve, be sure to book a stay at a place like the JW Marriott Hotel Rio de Janeiro to get a great view of the fireworks, music, and dancing on the beach!
And if you want to join in the fun, be sure to wear white clothes and colorful underwear symbolizing your New Year’s wish, and run into the water!
These are all fantastic places to honeymoon in South America. Whether you’re searching for an adventurous honeymoon in South America or you want top-notch romantic getaways in South America, you can’t go wrong with these incredible spots!
