Best Time to Visit Cape Town For A Honeymoon

Cape Town can be a fun city to visit year-round, but personally, I like visiting in September. This is the start of their spring and the flowers are in bloom, the days are getting sunnier, and it is also a great time of year to go on a safari in Kruger National Park up north, which means it makes for an overall great time to visit South Africa.

However, if you want sunny beach days and time at the pool, opt for their summertime months which are around November through March. Note that this is a popular time to visit and hotel prices can increase then.

If you want to go when prices are a little lower and you don’t mind gloomier weather, then the winter months around May through August are great times to visit too.

How to Get to Cape Town & Getting Around the City

South African Honeymoon Itinerary

Cape Town has a good-sized airport with many flights landing here from around the world. It is serviced by airlines like Delta, United, Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airlines, etc.

There are also several flights from around South Africa that land here too. I will say that it is usually easier to get flights to South Africa going into Johannesburg and then taking a flight to Cape Town from there. Regardless, I like to check Skyscanner for great flight deals!

Then, once you’re here, the public transportation isn’t too great. If you plan to get out of the city a lot or do a very active itinerary like the one I listed above with stops around the city and outside of it, having a car is a good idea.

However, if you don’t plan to leave the city much or you plan to take guided tours instead for transportation, definitely don’t get a car. Parking can be tough to find at times and break-ins do happen frequently, especially near the city bowl.

That being said, if you plan to visit places where you’ll likely need a car, then definitely get one. You can also do guided tours, and then there is the option of Ubering.

Locals told us to always order Uber Black when using Uber in Cape Town, as this ensures that the cars are good quality cars that run well. Also, it isn’t expensive to order Uber Black.

And lastly, if you plan to see a lot of the tourist sights, you can book the Hop On/Hop Off Bus too and use that as your transportation.

Other Tips For Your Honeymoon in Cape Town South Africa

Chris and Kat at the top of Table Mountain

Here are some other tips so that you have the best time during your romantic honeymoon to Cape Town:

  • The South African Rand is the currency of South Africa. It is valued at around $0.05 USD. So about 19-20 rand is equal to about $1 USD.
  • What languages are spoken in South Africa? Many people do speak English, so you’ll likely be fine with speaking English. However, some local languages in South Africa other than English include Afrikaans, Zulu, Swati, Northern and Southern Sotho, Tswana, Xhosa, Tsonga, Ndebele, Venda, Pedi, and more. English, Afrikaans, and Xhosa are most commonly spoken in Cape Town.
  • If you rent a car, keep some coins on hand. You’ll need to tip gas station attendants and people who watch your car when you park it. This is about R2-10.
  • If you rent a car, do NOT keep anything in the car. Break-ins are super common, so don’t leave anything in your car at all.
  • You need to know about load shedding. Load shedding is the name for the rolling blackouts all across the country. These last for a couple of hours at a time and multiple times per day sometimes. It has gotten worse over the years, and for updates, you’ll want to download the EskomSePush App. Also, hotels will have schedules too. Note that many hotels and restaurants have generators in the city, but some don’t.
  • Planning a trip to South Africa? Check out Safari365. We’ve worked with them to plan our perfect South Africa trips both times we’ve been and they go above and beyond to make sure it runs smoothly! They are also endlessly helpful when it comes to planning and answering questions.

This is everything you need to know to plan your Cape Town honeymoon. From where to stay to the best Cape Town honeymoon itinerary, we hope you have a great stay!
